During the age of sail, ships under flags of the imperial nations of Europe followed the trade winds to the far reaches of the globe in search of riches. Gold, spices, tea, and precious jewels were just some of the treasures that filled the holds of ships like the famed Spanish Galleons.

It was common place for the crown to commission and finance private crews to make a voyage on their behalf. The long journeys were perilous and there was no guarantee of return. For this reason, the shipping company and benefactors were partners, sharing in the fruits of a voyage - only if successful.
